In 2013, an ancient statue of Apollo, the god of arts, beauty and divinations, is found off the coast of Gaza. When it disappears under strange circumstances, rumors quickly spread regarding this mysterious treasure. Both an investigative film and a reflection on history, The Apollo of Gaza immerses us in the little-known reality of a land ravaged by wars and blockades.
Der Genfer Regisseur hat sich wiederholt mit der Situation der Palästinenser beschäftigt. «Dass diese Statue nicht öffentlich gezeigt werden kann», sagte er, «ist auch ein Sinnbild dafür, dass die Bevölkerung des Gazastreifens nicht frei leben kann.» Leider lässt er die Statue selbst als Offstimme raunen, was schwer erträglich ist. Sonst aber ist hoch spannend, wie jeder seiner Gesprächspartner die Dinge völlig anders interpretiert.
