Le signe du lion
Éric Rohmer, France, 1959o
The American musician Pierre lives in Paris and is waiting for the death of his aunt, which should bring him an inheritance and free him from his financial difficulties. After the news of her death, he gives a big party at the expense of his friends, but shortly afterwards he receives the news that his cousin is the sole heir. Broken and without the support of his friends, who are on summer vacation, Pierre is thrown out of his apartment and has to make his way on the streets.
What's present already, in this first film, is the director's strong eye for detail, his feel for building character through setting and gesture, and above all, his deep love of people, with all their foibles and troubles, all their failings and idiosyncrasies.
