Nach «Churchill» ist «Darkest Hour» bereits die zweite Filmbiografie über den legendären britischen Politiker innert Halbjahresfrist. Der Film von Kostümdrama-Spezialist Joe Wright («Atonement») funktioniert als Gegenstück zu Christopher Nolans «Dunkirk», doch Churchills berüchtigte Redeschwälle sind im Kino an der Grenze des Zumutbaren. Dennoch erhielt Oldman den Oscar für den besten Hauptdarsteller.

Wer, wenn nicht Winston Churchill, diese Galionsfigur britischer Coolness und Entschlossenheit, hätte Hitler und der Wehrmacht als Premierminister die Stirn bieten sollen? Was heute sonnenklar erscheint, versucht Joe Wright als historische Zitterpartie zu inszenieren, voller Zufälle, Ängste und Unsicherheiten rund um das Drama von Dunkirk. Man würde ihm den zweifelnden Churchill auch fast glauben, aber dann ruiniert er die Sache mit ein paar krass erfundenen Szenen. Gary Oldman in Doppelkinn-Maske ist dennoch eine Schau.
