The Italian countess Elena has made the wandering Roger her lover. However, he cannot fit into her world. When he falls into the water during a boat trip shortly afterwards, she does not help him but lets him drown. Elena thinks the saga is over, but after a few months, Roger's brother Richard appears. He looks confusingly like his brother, and so the love story of Elena and him is repeated - but with a different ending.
