Anton Ludvik, Czechoslovakia's deputy foreign minister, is arrested by the government in Prague. He is locked up in solitary confinement for months without ever learning the reasons for his imprisonment. Under psychological and physical torture, he is forced to confess to crimes he never committed and to repeat those confessions in a show trial. Years later, he meets his now disgraced tormentor, who tries to whitewash his role at the time.
