Martinique, in the early 1930s. In the village of Rivière-Salée, home to agricultural labourers, a grandmother is struggling to enable her grandson to get an education so that he will not have to work his whole life in the sugar cane fields. This film from Martinique garnered a number of awards including the Silver Lion for Best First Film and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 1983 Mostra di Venezia.
