Borderline
Kenneth Macpherson, UK, Switzerland, 1930o
This experimental silent film melodrama was considered lost until it was rediscovered by the British Film Institute in the 1990s. Produced by the avant-garde Pool Group and located in a Swiss resort, it follows the reactions of the guests as a mixed race couple enters the scene. The leading role is played by the American actor and singer Paul Robeson (1896-1976), one of the first black stars to gain mainstream popularity. Critics have repeatedly pointed to the homosexual subtext of the plot.
