Step Across the Border
Nicolas Humbert, Werner Penzel, Switzerland, Germany, 1990o
Making music as a spontaneous and incessant metabolism with the world: British musician Fred Frith does it as if it were the most natural thing in the world. In their cinematic improvisation, Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel respond to Frith's music with monatge sequences in which they take the same freedom. – The film was produced by Res Balzli and is shown as a homage to the Bernese producer who died in 2019. It was already an event at its premiere in Solothurn in 1990. Even if the bleak black and white and the limited sharpness of the source material seem slightly dated today, it remains one of the most experimental and overabundant music films ever.
