Berlin: Die Sinfonie der Grossstadt
Walter Ruttmann, Germany, 1927o
A train passes through fields, forests and villages, past small houses and stops. A sign appears in the steam of the locomotive: Berlin 15 kilometers. The houses grow larger and move closer together, the tracks multiply and the destination is reached: Berlin in the mid-1920s. But in the big city, the day is just beginning; the streets are empty, the shutters drawn. At first hesitantly, then with increasing determination, doors open, people pour into the streets and the streetcars go their separate ways. The work of the day is taken up and with increasing speed machinery and everyday scenes mix into a firework of montage.
