Zarafa

Under the cover of darkness a small boy, Maki, loosens the shackles that bind him and escapes into the desert night. Pursued by slavers across the moon-lit savannah, Maki meets Zarafa, a baby giraffe as well as the nomad Hassan, Prince of the Desert. Hassan takes them to Alexandria for an audience with the Pasha of Egypt, who orders him to deliver the exotic animal as a gift to King Charles of France. And so Maki, Zarafa and Hassan take off in a hot-air balloon to cross the Mediterranean.
Though the historical and political undercurrents are there for the taking for adult auds, including a rather unflattering view of the French ruling class, Bezancon and Lie never allow the politics to get in the way of their inventively told story [.] [...] While the gorgeous widescreen landscapes have a pencil-and-aquarelle quality, the characters themselves are literally rougher-edged, a clever reminder of the hand-drawn, sketchlike quality of traditional animation. Eine Sternstunde des europäischen Animationsfilms für Kinder und Erwachsene: Während die Kleinen den Abenteuern des afrikanischen Wüstenjungen Maki folgen, der von einem französischen Sklavenhändler verschleppt, von einem stolzen Beduinen befreit und zusammen mit seiner kleinen Giraffe Zarafa mit auf die grosse Reise nach Europa genommen wird, bekommen die Grossen auch die historischen Bezüge mit: vom Kolonialismus über die Belagerung Alexandrias durch die Osmanen bis zur Arroganz der Pariser Aristokratie und Bourgeoisie um 1830. Die Animation ist aufwändig und, speziell bei den Landschaftsbildern, wunderbar stimmig, der französische Chefanimator Jean-Christophe Lie, der u.a. La tortue rouge mitprägte, bringt seine Erfahrung bei Disney dabei ebenso ein wie die prägnante Linienführung, die in der Tradition der französischen Comics steht.

Ein Roadmovie, das 1826 von der afrikanischen Wüste über Mittelmeer und Alpen bis nach Paris führt: Auf wundersame Weise verbinden Rémi Bezançon und Jean-Christophe Lie die Realität von Kolonialisierung und Sklavenhandel mit den Märchen aus 1001 Nacht und setzen die große Tradition französischer Animationsfilme wie Les triplettes Belleville oder Kirikou et la sorcière fort.

Jean-Pierre LacommeLa beauté des décors et des couleurs est à mettre au crédit de ce film, dont le récit, bien mené, est servi par une jolie galaxie de personnages.
