Jakob Fabian lives in Berlin in the early 1930s. During the day he works at an advertising agency, at night he roams the bars, brothels and artists' studios with his best friend Labude. While Labude, after a breakup, throws himself into excesses and affairs, Fabian one day meets the confident legal trainee Cornelia Battenberg. Through her, Fabian manages for a moment to shed his pessimistic attitude, until he too loses his job.
