Facing the consequences of a violent uprooting, Mateo Sobode Chiqueno has been recording stories, songs, and testimonies of his Ayoreo people since the seventies. In an attempt to preserve fragments of a disappearing culture, Mateo walks across communities in the arid and desolate Paraguayan Chaco region, and registers on cassettes the experiences of other Ayoreo who, like him, were born in the vast forest, free and nomadic, without any contact with white civilization, until religious missionaries forced them to abandon their ancestral territory.
Arami Ullóns Dokumentarfilm ist ein intimes Porträt einer exotischen Gemeinschaft und gleichzeitig schmerzhaftes Mahnmal für ein irreversibles Unrecht an den Ayoreo, die hier nur stellvertretend für viele andere Bevölkerungsgruppen mit ähnlichem Schicksal stehen. Bei einer ruhigeren Kameraführung hätten die von Schmerz und Ohnmacht gezeichneten Gesichter noch eindrücklicher gewirkt.
Teresa VenaLe deuxième long-métrage d'Arami Ullón laisse enfin s'exprimer une culture, celle des Ayoreo, jusque là réduite au silence. Avec un regard empreint de poésie et de respect, le réalisateur creuse dans les profondeurs de ses personnages à la recherche d’une vérité qui se situe au-delà de leurs paroles et se niche dans leurs gestes (enrouler le ruban magnétique des cassettes, tisser et coudre, gesticuler presque sans le vouloir), porteurs de vérités qui restent inscrites dans leurs corps malgré le déracinement.
