Growing up in post-World War II era Arizona, young Sammy Fabelman aspires to become a filmmaker as he reaches adolescence, but soon discovers a shattering family secret and explores how the power of films can help him see the truth.

Steven Spielberg has been the great fairy tale uncle of American cinema since the 1970s. Now, in the autumn of his career, the 76-year-old looks back on his beginnings as a cinema-crazy toddler, a filming schoolboy in Arizona and a Jewish outsider at high school in California. Son of a concert pianist in disguise and a brilliant electrical engineer, as well as the eldest brother of three sisters, Spielberg once again brings family life to life in candy colors as a primal cell of security, but also as a primal experience of uprooting, as soon as his alter ego discovers his mother's double life. Above all, however, he celebrates the craft of film as a machine of enchantment and insight. That there are some didactic and kitschy moments in the process, even after an aseptic exposition, goes without saying with this director. Like all the larger casts of the gifted entertainer, overall captivating feel-good cinema spiced with humor and sentiment.
