At the beginning of the 20th century, Maria Sarti, a young Roman woman who performs in small open-air theaters, dreams of becoming a real stage star. After some unfortunate experiences, she is forced by famine to improvise as a singer in a cabaret in Naples. As the inventor of the "mossa" - a hip movement that sends her provincial audience into raptures - Maria outrages the authorities and is accused of obscenity. After moving to Turin, she falls in love with a young officer and challenges an aristocratic lady to a duel.
