Shortly before the end of World War 2, the SS leadership wanted to blow up the Simplon Tunnel. The Swiss secret service contacted Italian resistance fighters: On April 22, 1945, they set fire to 64 tons of explosives - and thus saved the tunnel. A Swiss trainman and a Catholic priest also played an important role.
