The Prince and the Showgirl

In 1911, the interim regent of the (fictional) Balkan country of Carpathia comes to London for the coronation of the heir to the British throne. After attending a musical, the regent invites a showgirl to an intimate souper with unmistakable intentions - and thoroughly miscalculates the supposedly easy prey. Despite her increasing drunkenness, the showgirl stands up to the self-important rooster and string-puller with increasing cunning and, in the process, torpedoes his political machinations.
Zu Unrecht kaum bekannt oder wieder vergessen: Laurence Oliviers Verfilmung des gleichnamigen Bühnenstücks aus der Feder des damaligen Dramatiker-Stars Terence Rattigan ist nicht weniger als eine der geistreichsten "Sophisticated Comedies" aus der klassischen Hollywood- und Pinewood-Blütezeit. Rattigans Dialoge sprühen vor Esprit, Olivier filmische Inszenierung im reinen Studio-Setting ist von erstaunlicher filmischer Eleganz, und Marilyn Monroe hält dem 15 Jahre älteren Schwergewicht Olivier mit tänzerischer Supplesse und fantastischem komödiantischem Timing mühelos die Waage. Zusammen mit den zwei Wilder-Komödien vermutlich die grösste schauspielerische Leistung in MMs goldenen sieben Jahren.
