Barbie and Ken live mindlessly happy lives in the wholesome, aseptic plastic world to which manufacturer Mattel has expanded its collection of dolls. When Barbie is unexpectedly haunted by fears of death, flat feet and cellulite visions, they have to take a step into the real world of today's Los Angeles to track down Barbie's original owner, whose worries have apparently been transferred to the doll. In the process, they learn that today's world wasn't waiting for them, and their early baby boomer values are hopelessly outdated.
