Beethoven: The Five Piano Concertos
Phil Grabsky, UK, 2012-2014, 1 Seasono
In 2012/13, Norwegian star pianist Leif Ove Andsnes teamed up with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra to record live performances of the five piano concertos with which Ludwig van Beethoven opened up new dimensions in this secret royal genre of concert classical music at the turn of the 19th century by intertwining piano and orchestra more boldly than almost anyone before or after him. British art and music specialist Phil Grabsky has documented the five live concertos in their entirety.
One of the pleasures of these splendid performances is the rapport between the soloist/conductor and his musicians. They play as one. Another is the clarity of texture and the variety and sensitivity of colour… Andsnes’s playing sparkles, but, however swift, never sounds hurried.
NNThis is an all-round winner of a series, with superlative playing from both soloist and orchestra, and a recorded sound to match.
