Searching for Sugar Man

In the early 1970s, American singer-songwriter Sixto Rodriguez recorded two committed albums that experts compared to those of Bob Dylan. They were commercial flops, and no one heard from Rodriguez again. Except in South Africa, where, unbeknownst to him, his record "Cold Fact" became a symbol of the struggle against Apartheid. The most incredible rumors circulated about his supposed suicide, and so it was that years later, two fans in Cape Town set off in search of "Sugar Man".
Die Geschichte von Sugar Man ist wahrlich unglaublich: Der Sänger, den viele für den besseren Dylan hielten, führt heute ein simples Leben in Detroit, obschon er im Südafrika der 70er-Jahre zum Idol der Gegenkultur aufstieg. Vermutlich glaubt Bendjelloul zu gern an einen Mythos, den er hier tatkräftig mitfabriziert. Doch das Personal aus Plattenverkäufern, Journalisten und altgedienten Musikproduzenten ist sympathisch und führt zurück in eine Zeit, als man die Liner Notes eines Albums noch gelesen hat. Oscar für den besten Dokumentarfilm.
