When Helen’s beloved father dies, she loses herself in memories of the time they spent together birdwatching and exploring nature. Obsessed with the idea of training a goshawk herself, she brings the imposing bird, Mabel, to live with her in Cambridge. But as she tries to teach Mabel how to hunt and fly unaided, she gradually realises just how much she has neglected her own feelings and her own life.

Lilia returns to her native Tunisia with her girlfriend to attend her uncle’s funeral, where she is reunited with her family, who know nothing about her life in Paris. As relatives gather and old friends turn up to reminisce, Lila learns of the mysterious circumstances surrounding her uncle’s death. She sets out to unravel the mystery and stumbles upon taboos.
