Berlin 1896: Alexander Hoffmann is an ambitious ethnology doctoral student and wants to follow in the footsteps of his father, who died in Africa. He makes the acquaintance of a Herero delegation presented to Kaiser Willhelm as a subjugated people and exotic attraction. His approach to one of the Herero women strengthens his conviction that the "savages" are not an inferior race. When the Kaiser orders a campaign against the rebellious Herero in German South-West Africa in 1904, Hoffmann goes along as an ethnological escort. The war demands much more of him than he ever imagined.
