Haiti is marking the 200th anniversary of its independence. President Jean Dieu rambles on about democracy and appeals to the people with a call for solidarity. Guests from all over the world are arriving at his fortress-like palace to take part in the celebrations. Key foreign politicians have cancelled their attendance. Word has got round that the people are already demonstrating against Jean Dieu’s despotic rule. Jean Dieu has the rebels beaten down and defiantly invites everyone to dinner.
