Bumblebee

In 1987, Bumblebee takes refuge in a small California beach town junkyard, where a teenage girl named Charlie Watson takes him in. However, the two of them soon find themselves hunted by a government agency known as Sector 7, led by Agent Jack Burns. As they run from society, the two learn that Bee is not the only transformer on Earth…
“Bumblebee” is such a massive stylistic and tonal shift for the “Transformers” franchise that it’s incredibly hard to even discuss it without resorting to comparison. If “Bumblebee” were the very first entry in this live-action franchise, it might seem small and derivative of 1980s kids films. But as a course correction for the series, pulling the previously complex mythology way back and starting over from scratch, it’s enormously effective.

Kaum ist Zerstörungs-Auteur Michael Bay mal nicht mit dabei, macht ein "Transformers"-Film auf einmal Spaß. Die Kloppereien zwischen riesenhaften Autorobotern, als selling point der Marke leider unverzichtbar, halten sich in diesem Prequel nämlich in Grenzen. Travis Knights Film ist hauptsächlich eine in den Achtzigern spielende Coming-Of-Age-Geschichte, mit Hailee Steinfeld als cooler Protagonistin.

Der neue Transformers-Film ist ganz anders: Produzent Steven Spielberg hatte die Idee, wie bei «E.T.» von einem Teenager aus einer disfunktionalen Vorstadtfamilie zu erzählen, der sich mit einem Ausserirdischen anfreundet. Berührend erzählt Regisseur Travis Knight («Kubo and the Two Strings») die Coming-of-Age-Geschichte und inszeniert den Film schön ironisch als Vintage-Blockbuster.
