In the "Roaring Twenties", the "Cotton Club" in Harlem is one of the most sought-after, but also most scandalous jazz clubs in New York. After the jazz trumpeter Dixie Dwyer saves the life of the Mafia boss Dutch Schultz, he is sponsored by the latter. Schultz gets him a job as a bodyguard for his gangster sweetheart Vera, but Dixie falls in love with her, and that's when his problems really begin.
