The Gardner family moves to a remote farmstead in rural New England to escape the hustle of the 21st century. They are busy adapting to their new life when a meteorite crashes into their front yard, melts into the earth, and infects both the land and the properties of space-time with a strange, otherworldly colour. Frei nach H. P. Lovecraft knechtet in Richard Stanleys Horrorfilm eine außerirdische Macht eine Familie (und ihre Alpakas) in ihrem Landhaus. Da kann auch der von Nicholas Cage gespielte Vater nichts ausrichten. Seine Ausraster sind trotzdem sehr sehenswert, ebenso wie das Fluoreszieren der extraterrestrischen Farbe, die nach und nach Körper und Psychen der Familienmitglieder entstellt und zu Fleischklumpen verklebt.

Der Südafrikaner Richard Stanley wurde Anfang der 90er mit trashigen Horrorfilmchen zum Kultregisseur. Ähnlich schräg ist dieses Comeback, die Adaption einer Lovecraft-Kurzgeschichte: Der Film ist ein Farbentrip mit schwarzem Humor, viel Gefluche, schleimigen Monstern und einem schrillen Nicolas Cage. In einer Nebenrolle tritt Tommy Chong als zugekiffter Waldschrat auf. Mit anderen Worten: Beste Unterhaltung.
