Kavita, an Indian woman who grew up in London, has a brilliant career as a musician ahead of her when she becomes pregnant. In the hope that her former nanny will be able to help her out, she travels to Calcutta. In fact, she learns from Deepali a few things about her family and origins that her parents had previously kept from her. Above all, however, she discovers that Mother Teresa's commitment to India's poorest people has also directly influenced her own fate.
