Bruce Wayne aka Batman roams the streets of Gotham City, striking fear into the hearts of criminals. Der neuste Batman-Film ist der düsterste bisher. Optisch mutet er an wie eine Vermählung von Ridley Scotts Set-Design aus «Blade Runner» mit David Finchers Serienkillerfilm «Seven». «The Batman» beweist, dass der erzählerisch-ästhetische Kosmos des dunklen Rächers noch lange nicht ausgelotet ist.

Regisseur Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) inszeniert seinen Batman-Film düster und regnerisch, nimmt Anleihen bei Horrorfilmen wie The Crow, Seven und Saw. Das ist etwas verkrampft, aber allemal unterhaltsam. Interessant wirds, wo der Film die Figur Batman hinterfragt: Der stellt fest, dass er als privilegierter Milliarden-Erbe einige blinde Flecken hat, was die sozialen Probleme Gothams anbelangt.
Gregor SchenkerGotham est une ville nocturne toujours pluvieuse, désenchantée. Son image recoupe la tendance "dark" qu’ont pris les films de superhéros, Marvel ou DC, depuis une dizaine d’années. Matt Reeves n'y déroge pas, mais parvient à donner de nouvelles couleurs au "Chevalier noir", en creusant le personnage, sans jamais toutefois négliger l’action.
Jacky BornetThe Batman est bien l’œuvre bouleversante que l'on n'espérait plus. Sombre, décadent et d'un nihilisme total, le film de Matt Reeves déploie une relecture désespérée d'un Chevalier Noir plus politique que jamais. Son casting parfait et sa mise en scène classieuse fournissent l'écrin impérial d'un blockbuster immanquable.
