The story of the city kid Pietro and the mountain boy Bruno, who become friends at the age of twelve in the Aosta Valley in northern Italy, become men, work through their fathers, love and losses, and never lose sight of each other despite going their separate ways. In long mountain summers, they rebuild a crumbling hut; with each reunion, they ask themselves anew whether the settled or the unsteady life is the right one. What remains for them in any case is their bond.
How do you find a fulfilled life? By staying with one's roots in the Aosta Valley and defying all odds there like the mountain boy Bruno? Or by going out into the world and exposing oneself to the most diverse influences at the price of unhomeliness like the city kid Pietro? After the early masterpiece The Broken Circle Breakdown and the probing father-son study Beautiful Boy, Belgian Felix van Groeningen once again explores existential questions and, together with his wife Charlotte Vandermeersch, films the bestseller "Eight Mountains" by Paolo Cognetti, in which two childhood friends work every summer to rebuild a crumbling alpine hut while talking about their origins, love and the question of the good life. As long as Bruno and Pietro are still boys and men-to-be, it takes on the appearance of a Readers Digest version of the novel, in which the themes are only tapped. With each annual ring, however, the film gains atmosphere and depth, and where the words are not enough, the landscapes and the nature-infused music of the Swede Daniel Norgren take over the main part. A great epic about masculinity, separate paths and lasting bonds.
Andreas FurlerDer rastlose Pietro kehrt jeden Sommer zum bodenständigen Bergler Bruno zurück, die Freundschaft der beiden überdauert alles. Während der Film seinen unterschwelligen Brokeback Mountain-Vibe konsequent durchhält, aber nie einlöst. Das ist nicht der einzige Trick, der hier eine magische Wirkung entfaltet. Ein anderer ist das klassische Academy-Bildformat, das sich im Gegensatz zu den längst gewohnten Breitbild-Formaten tatsächlich viel besser eignet, die vielen Vertikalen der Berge zur Geltung zu bringen. Gleichzeitig wirkt es immer wie ein Fenster von Innen nach aussen, was die Kamera auch immer wieder suggeriert. Le otto montagne ist ein sehr eigenwilliger, sehr schöner und manchmal etwas zu einfacher Film. Dass er die Kraft hat, einen ziemlich viel tiefer zu berühren, als man sich selber in den zweieinhalb Stunden eingestehen mag, spricht übrigens für genau diese Einfachheit.

Nouvelle preuve avec ce Huit montagnes, co-réalisé avec sa femme Charlotte Vandermeersch. Adapté du roman de Paolo Cognetti, le film suit de l’enfance à l’âge adulte Pietro, l’enfant solitaire de la ville, et Bruno, le gamin farouche de l’alpage. Pris à bras-le-corps dans une histoire intense, parfois violente, le spectateur suit les héros entre désenchantement et lyrisme. Incroyablement filmé (les montagnes occupent tout l'espace du cadre carré), incroyablement incarné (est-ce qu'un jour Lucas Marinelli, l’interprète de Pietro, aura le succès qu'il mérite ?), le film produit des vibrations intimes puissantes et impressionne par sa maestria visuelle et sa manière de mettre l'homme face à lui-même, entre doute, renoncement et espoir émerveillé.
