The slick and self-absorbed car dealer Charlie Babbitt receives the news of the death of his father, with whom he has had no contact for years. He is shocked to discover that he will inherit nothing from the large fortune. The three million dollars go to a residential home for the mentally handicapped. Charlie immediately visits the place and hears for the first time that he has an older brother. In order to get some of the money, he takes the autistic Raymond to live with him. Since Raymond suffers from a fear of flying, the two travel across the USA in a car.
