After two eleven-year-old boys have been fighting, the parents of the 'victim' invite the parents of the 'evildoer' to clarify the incident like reasonable people. What begins as a peaceful exchange about civilization, violence and the limits of responsibility soon develops into a conflict in which the varnish of sophistication badly conceals deep-seated frustrations, injuries and aggressions. In the process, alliances are constantly shifting in ways nobbody had expected.
Eigentlich besagt eine alte Kino-Regel, dass man nur anderthalb Stunden mit Menschen auf der Leinwand verbringt, wenn man mindestens einen von ihnen mag. So richtig sympathisch ist Polanskis Scheinheiligenquartett nicht - aber man sieht ihnen beim Ekligsein verdammt gerne zu. Es ist ein böses, kleines Drama, das sie aufführen - auch wenn es vielleicht am Ende doch zu sehr an der Oberfläche spielt, als dass man es beispielsweise mit "Ekel" vergleichen könnte. (Auszug)

Stéphanie BelpêcheAvec un plaisir cruel, Polanski s'amuse à décaper le vernis social de deux couples new-yorkais pour montrer leur hostilité. La plupart des travers sont épinglés avec une ironie contemporaine. Le tout emballé sans effort par des acteurs que mène le toujours excellent Christoph Waltz.
