Spring 1873: People from all over the world flock to the small town of Göschenen in the canton of Uri to work on the largest and most spectacular construction site of modern times: the tunnel through the Saint Gotthard. Along the fates of three young people in the fever of the "Gründerzeit" (founding period), the film tells the story of this gigantic effort which, like no other event, brings the young nation states of Europe closer together.
