r The Gold Rush
Charlie Chaplin, USA, 1925o
Alaska in the winter of 1898. Adventurers come from all directions in search of gold, including Charlie, the tramp, who doesn’t fit in at all with this rough-and-tumble crowd. To escape the blizzard, he takes refuge in a cabin belonging to the desperado Black Larson. Snow blows in the naive Big Jim, who has discovered a gold vein—but where? Fate leads Charlie to the gold mining town. But his heart isn’t set on gold; it’s set on Georgia, the beautiful dancer at the lively saloon..
It's still a riot in spite of the despair, as Chaplin manages to find humor in even the most desperate situations—a talent derived, no doubt, from growing up in abject poverty. This also holds the distinction of featuring what is perhaps Chaplin's best performance as the Tramp.
