L’Île aux oiseaux
Sergio da Costa, Sergio da Costa, Switzerland, 2019o
After a long period of isolation, Antonin, a young man suffering from persisting exhaustion, rediscovers the world at a rehabilitation center for birds. In this strange place wounded birds and lost souls cohabit, lulled by the ubiquitous sounds of airplanes.
Taking the learning curve of apprenticeship as their faint dramatic outline, the two filmmakers still conceive cinema as starting from day-to-day situations to reveal their archetypical implications. Here the birds of prey kept in large cages become emblems of the alien, quarantined before they can fly far away. A parable of our time, told through images that are as clear and fundamental as the mystery they enshrine.Daniela Persico
