Yokogao
Kōji Fukada, Japan, France, 2019o
Ichiko works as a nurse for a family she has almost become a part of. But when the younger sister disappears, the media soon reveal the kidnapper to be her own nephew…
From Harmonium (2016) to Hospitalité (2010), Koji Fukada’s films cut into the veneer of stability in Japanese society. This is no exception. A heightened frenzy of the media surrounding a kidnapping case traps Ichiko − yet she isn’t simply innocent. As the title Yokogao (side profile) suggests, she has more than one story to tell in this cautionary tale that dwells on the costs of leaving things unsaid and sharing things that should remain secret.
