The naked body of a woman is found in the immense expanse of the Mongolian steppe. Overnight a young and inexperienced policeman is to secure the scene of the crime. Since he is not familiar with the dangers of the place, a local shepherdess is asked to keep an eye on him and the body. In the depth of the night the two slowly get closer.

Die Steppenlandschaft, in der die erste Stunde des Films spielt, wirkt zuerst eintönig, aber in ihrem grossartigen Licht spielt sich die ungewöhnlichste Polizei- und Liebesgeschichte der Saison ab. Die Fortsetzung an neuen Schauplätzen ist später etwas gesuchter – kann aber den hervorragenden Gesamteindruck nicht schmälern.
