Maria M., a southern Italian, tells her life story. It is the story of a woman who followed her husband into emigration, to the North, where there is work and "progress". Instead of a better world, she encounters coldness, indifference and misery. In keeping with her upbringing, she withdraws into her four walls, which become her prison. Maria M.'s voice guides us through the film. She herself wants to remain unrecognised. Another Italian emigrant takes over her role in the film. It is also her life, her experiences, that she "portrays".
