In 1794, the young General Napoleon Bonaparte falls in love with 17-year-old Désirée Clary, daughter of a Marseilles silk merchant. Years later they meet again as enemies: Napoleon is about to marry the noblewoman Josephine. Désirée, on the other hand, enters into a not very happy marriage with Count Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's greatest adversaries, and becomes Queen of Sweden.
