Japan around 1900. Wealthy yet despised, Okane returns to her home village following the death of her much older, cruel husband. The bigoted villagers regard her as a ‘witch’, and all the more so when she begins a passionate affair with Seisaku, an exemplary soldier. After Japan declares war on Russia, her lover goes off to battle, is wounded and subsequently nursed back to health. He wants to return to the front once more. To prevent this, Okane resorts to drastic measures.
