Jean, in his fifties, has lost his lust for life. He leaves Canada for a faraway country, somewhere in Europe. A beautiful place to end his days, he thought. But that was without counting on the formidable resilience of the inhabitants and residents of the Hotel Silence.

On August 30, 1972, John Lennon played his only full concert after leaving the Beatles in New York City: the “One to One” benefit concert at Madison Square Garden – a rousing performance together with Yoko Ono. This musical event is the starting point for this documentary, which takes a look behind the scenes and at 18 formative months in the lives of John and Yoko after they moved from England to Manhattan's “Village,” where the couple sought their place in the counterculture of the early 1970s.

Aurora, a Portuguese migrant, works as an order picker in a warehouse in Edinburgh, Scotland. Caught between the walls of a huge distribution centre and the solitude of her own room, Aurora tries to seize every opportunity to resist the alienation and isolation that threaten her identity.

Joan, no longer in love, leaves her partner Victor, the father of her daughter. Joan is convinced her decision is morally justified, but it comes back to bite her when Victor subsequently disappears, leaving her overwhelmed with guilt. Her best friend Alice, for her part, is an advocate for marriages of convenience, relationships devoid of love but built upon affection, which she finds more bearable than passionate love. But Joan’s friend Rebecca sees love as an adventure, and is involved in a secret relationship with Alice’s partner. These are three close women who are light years apart in their attitudes and moral beliefs. Three women who try to defend their ideas and assert their choices.

Skalde lives in a small rural community, far from a world that may no longer exist. Autumn 1943: Berlin is being bombed and young Rosa Sauer flees to rural East Prussia while her husband is serving as a soldier on the Eastern Front. However, Hitler's headquarters, the Wolf's Lair, is located near the village. Suddenly, Rosa and other women are recruited by the SS. They are forced to serve as food tasters for Hitler's meals. The situation escalates when the Stauffenberg assassination attempt on Hitler fails in the summer of 1944.

Yvonne Nguyen, a French-Vietnamese actress, dreams of a successful career in musicals, to the great displeasure of her mother, who would like her to pursue a more serious path. When she has no choice but to move back to her mother’s, both women are strangers to each other. But in the intimacy of the Vietnamese family restaurant’s kitchen, they grow closer. Meanwhile, Yvonne is still after her dreams and finally gets the chance to audition for a big show.
