The conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) moves like a fish in water in the liberal artistic and intellectual circles of the American East Coast in the 1940s. At the age of 25, he is able to fill in as a conductor at New York's Carnegie Hall, a little later he meets his future wife, the actress Felicia Montealegre. Their thirty-year relationship and the resulting family life with three children are marked by Bernstein's tireless creative energy and zest for life, but hit a severe crisis when the star conductor begins to live his bisexuality all too openly in the wake of the '68 upheaval.
