Maren, Robert and Volker have known and loved each other since childhood in the East German town of Halberstadt in the summer of 1990. By chance, they find the GDR's millions in an old mine shaft, which have been stored there to rot. The three of them smuggle out rucksacks full of it. Together with their friends and neighbours, they develop an ingenious system to exchange the now worthless money for goods and cheat the onrushing Westerners.
